People keep asking in 2026 if the original Path of Exile is still worth booting up, especially with PoE 2 soaking up the spotlight. It is, and not in a "nostalgia" way. PoE 1 still delivers that messy, high-speed rush where you blink and the whole screen's gone, and you're already sorting loot. If you're the type who likes planning ahead, you'll even catch folks grabbing cheap POE Currency early so they can focus on testing builds instead of stalling out on gear.
Build Freedom Still Hits DifferentThe real hook hasn't changed: you're not locked into a neat little class box. The passive tree is still that absurd galaxy map, and it lets you do weird stuff on purpose. You start as a Ranger and end up feeling like a spell-slinging machine, or you roll a tanky Duelist and somehow turn it into a lightning blender. Then you add the gem system on top. Skill gems, support gems, links, colour juggling—yeah, it's a pain at first, but it's also why people stick around. You'll spend an evening "just tweaking one thing," and suddenly it's 2 a.m. and you haven't even run a map.
Endgame That Doesn't Run OutOnce you hit maps, PoE 1 stops pretending it's a normal campaign ARPG. The Atlas is basically an endlessly re-rollable playground where you decide how spicy things get. You want steady profit and chill clears? You can do that. You want risk, scarabs, and modifiers that make your build sweat? Go for it. And the side systems still feel like their own games: Delve for that long, hungry descent; Heist when you want a change of pace and a bit of "in and out" tension. Even now, PoE 1 feels faster and looser than the sequel, and for some players that's the whole point.
The Catch: It Won't Hold Your HandLet's not pretend it's welcoming. The first few days can feel like you're reading a different language. Crafting is deep, the economy's player-driven, and you'll hear a lot of slang that makes zero sense until it suddenly does. Most people either follow a guide or they brick a character once, learn the hard way, and come back smarter. That's the weird charm of it. When your build finally clicks—defences steady, damage online, maps flowing—you feel like you earned it.
Skipping the Slow PartIf you don't have the time (or patience) to grind every upgrade from scratch, plenty of players just smooth out the rough edges by buying currency or items so they can jump into the fun parts sooner. That's where eznpc comes in, since it's set up for people who want a straightforward way to gear up and keep their momentum without turning progression into a second job.
