I was reading about ESG reporting for startups the other day and wanted to check I have understood it properly, because most of what I find is either written for listed companies with a sustainability team or comes from consultancies selling their own services. Here is what I have pieced together, and I would appreciate anyone correcting me.
ESG stands for environmental, social and governance, and reporting seems to be about measuring and sharing how a business performs on things like carbon emissions, workforce diversity, supplier conduct and board oversight. As I understand it, most UK startups have no legal duty to publish a full ESG report. The mandatory requirements, such as climate-related financial disclosures and Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting, generally apply to large companies, listed businesses and some large private ones above set size thresholds, so small companies sit outside most of it.
What I keep seeing is that the pressure arrives indirectly. Investors increasingly ask about ESG policies during due diligence, larger customers add sustainability questions to supplier questionnaires, and public sector tenders often score social value and carbon reduction plans. There are also several frameworks in circulation, including the GHG Protocol for carbon, B Corp certification and the emerging UK Sustainability Reporting Standards, and I am unsure which one makes sense at an early stage. Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions are another point of confusion, particularly whether a small team needs to measure anything beyond energy use, travel and perhaps a few key suppliers.
My question is how startups decide what level of ESG reporting is proportionate, and whether a simple set of policies and a basic carbon footprint is enough for most investor and customer requests. I would also like to know which tools or advisers are worth paying for this early, how much time it realistically takes, and whether greenwashing is something small companies should worry about under the CMA's rules. I have read something similar to this on Entrepreneur Plus , so I would like to hear from anyone who has set it up, what investors or customers actually asked for, and whether it caused any friction during a later raise.
